Photographer unknown, 1944. Courtesy of Martha Graham Resources. T his is a legend of American living. It is like the bone structure, the inner frame that holds together a people. Some things happen to our mothers and some things happen to us, but they all happen to us. These happenings flow from generation to generation and they are our possessions and we are familiar with them. This has to do with living in a new town, some place where the first fence has just gone up. The different parts and different characters span a long time length and do not fit into any period of history. It should happen as such memories flow through our hearts. –– Martha Graham to Aaron Copland
